Toys & gifts for kids aged 9 or 10

No time for the whole list? These are our four favourites for a child aged 9 or 10: the lightning-fast card game Skyjo that you learn in five minutes, Het dikke boek van alle bijzondere dieren (the big book of remarkable animals) to leaf through night after night, the Laura’s Bakery children’s baking book for an afternoon of baking, and the LEGO dolphins that take pride of place in their room once built. Four gifts you can’t go wrong with.

A small gift for a child aged 9 or 10, for the Sinterklaas shoe, for a good school report or for a birthday party. Everything below costs less than ten euros, and every one of them is a gift they’ll be happy with.

With up to 25 euros there’s plenty of choice for a lovely gift: an exciting board game, a thick book, a craft kit or something to take outside. Everything below has been picked for a child aged 9 or 10, and there’s a surprise in there for anyone who doesn’t know their wishes.

Something to take outdoors stays one of the best gifts for a child of 9 or 10: throwing, catching, launching and getting a little better every time. For the playground, the campsite and the holidays.

At this age children read well on their own and devour funny and exciting series. Here are titles that go down well with boys and girls of 9 and 10, from spooky and hilarious to adventurous. (Most are Dutch editions.)

Around nine or ten, drawing moves from “colouring in” to “making something”: a step-by-step book, good colouring pencils and a sketchbook of their own are exactly the right gift then. Pipoos has a large range of drawing supplies. Also see our blogs on lovely drawing supplies for children and the best drawing books for children.

Modelling clay, embroidery, crochet or a pixel artwork: craft gifts that absorb a child of 9 or 10 for a whole afternoon and produce something they can hold. Pipoos has plenty more creative sets.

Books full of fascinating facts, beautiful illustrations and surprising trivia. From outer space to the deep sea, these books make children of 9 and 10 curious about the world around them.

Jigsaws, a brain teaser for the road or a pocket-sized escape room: puzzling trains concentration and perseverance, and it’s nice and calm. Lotana has puzzles in all shapes and levels of difficulty.

At this age a board game is the gift that comes out on the table most often: quickly explained, exciting for children and adults alike, and different every time. Card and dice games you learn in ten minutes and then take on every holiday. More choice at Lotana and 999 Games.

LEGO has been the gift that makes children happy for generations. At this age the sets get bigger and the builds more challenging, and the result gets a place in their room. Browse the full range in the LEGO Shop.

There’s plenty of building to do outside LEGO too. A marble run you design yourself and test straight away, a metal or wooden kit that goes together without glue, or a Plus-Plus mosaic of five hundred pieces. Gifts for a child of 9 or 10 that absorb them for a whole evening.

Around nine or ten they can do a lot in the kitchen themselves, and a cookbook with clear steps turns an afternoon into a party. A gift for a child of 9 or 10 that you get back as a parent in pancakes and biscuits.

A fun day out together is a treat in itself: you experience something special and make memories to talk about for ages. A few ideas:
