Toys & gifts for kids aged 11 or 12

For teenagers, a gift is really about their hobbies, taste and personality — less general “age advice”, much more their own world. On this page you’ll find our ideas, including outdoor play, children's baking books, brain teasers & escape games, arts & crafts, board games and more. See the lists above for concrete suggestions.

With teenagers it’s really about who they are: hobbies, taste in music, favourite games and style. Asking what they’d like often works best. A gift card for their favourite online shop is a welcome back-up — then they choose exactly what suits them.

For teenagers the budget tends to go up a little — €15 to €50 is common, depending on how close you are and what they’d like. A gift card works well for a larger amount too.

For teenagers, sustainability is more about quality over quantity: a beautiful book, a personal or handmade gift, or a gift card for a sustainable online shop. Second-hand and vintage finds that match their interests (fashion, music, hobbies) are increasingly popular, and books remain a timeless choice that can be kept or passed on.

Yes, but it isn’t called toys any more. Where an eight-year-old plays with a construction set, a teenager does the same with a board game, a brain teaser, a puzzle or a video game — and that is exactly what toys are at this age. What does change: it mustn’t look childish, and it’s more often something to do together than alone. This page has the games, puzzles and gadgets that still get played with at 13 to 16.

Teenagers are picky, and that isn’t unwillingness — their taste is set and they know exactly what is and isn’t okay. What works best: something from their own world (music, games, sport, make-up, series), something small they’ll really use, or a gift card so they can choose themselves. Avoid gifts that are “good for them” but that they never asked for. This page has 68 ideas, from a few euros to a bigger present.

An 11-year-old is in the last years of primary school and outgrowing the children’s room: they wants something that doesn’t look childish, but still plays and makes things. What goes down well: a board game to play with friends, something for their bedroom, a craft set with a real result, or a book from a series they already knows. This page has 68 ideas, each with its price.

Twelve is the year secondary school starts in the Netherlands, and you can see it in the wishes: their own style, their own music, and things they picks out themselves. Gifts linked to a hobby or a series they’s into right now do better than a general “children’s gift”. Not sure? Ask about the wishlist, or give something small plus a gift card.

At this age the shoe usually makes way for drawing names and “surprises”, often with a budget of €10 to €25 per name. For that, look at “Gifts up to €25” and “Gifts up to €10” on this page; for a bigger present from parents or grandparents, at “Our top 4”. You can draw names for free on Kindkado, with a wishlist per name so nobody buys the same thing twice: see drawing names. New to Sinterklaas? Our guide to celebrating Sinterklaas with kids explains the traditions.
