Craft supplies for boys — cool, creative and truly home-made
Looking for craft supplies for boys, a craft kit or a creative gift? From building with cardboard and wood to tie-dye, clay, your own mug and bracelets in cool colours: grouped by age and by type of craft.
By Sonja ·
Boys love crafting just as much as girls do, but in the shops the craft aisle is often pink, purple and full of glitter. But there’s so much more! With a cool theme, cool colours and real tools, crafting becomes something a boy is proud of: a cardboard racing car, his own T-shirt, a bracelet with his name or a mug he drinks from every morning.
In this blog you’ll find loads of inspiration: first craft supplies by age, then by type of craft. Building with cardboard and wood, bracelets and necklaces, shrink plastic, tie-dye, modelling clay and plaster casting, painting a mug, decorating biscuits, crafting with rubbish and with nature from the woods, sustainable crafting, Pixelhobby and Ministeck, more sustainable ironing beads and craft books. For toddlers we have a separate blog: crafts for toddlers and preschoolers. Looking for craft supplies for girls too? Have a look at our craft supplies for girls. Handy as a creative gift for a birthday, Sinterklaas or Christmas too.
Craft supplies for boys by age
These are minimum ages: what’s fun from 5 is often still fun at 7. Looking for inspiration for a boy younger than 5? Then have a look at crafts for toddlers and preschoolers. More gift ideas are in our gift ideas for boys aged 5–6, 7–8, 9–10 and 11–12.
The product links are affiliate links: if you order through one, you support Kindkado with a small commission — at no extra cost to you. The shops are Dutch online shops that deliver in the Netherlands and Belgium, and the product names are in Dutch.
Craft supplies for boys from age 5
At five or six, a boy mostly wants to do things himself. With Makedo he builds a car or a robot out of cardboard, with tie-dye a white T-shirt becomes his own design, and with Djeco he decorates three rockets with mosaic. Or cast and paint your own mythical creatures in plaster. Join in the first few times.

Craft supplies for boys from age 8
Around eight, it can get more technical and precise. With a real fretsaw he cuts his own shapes out of wood, with HABA’s Terra Kids Connectors he builds with branches, he puts together his own kaleidoscope, and with the book Paracord kids he knots cool bracelets. Doing experiments or painting a mug becomes fun now too.

Building with cardboard and wood
For many boys, building is the best kind of crafting. With Makedo, reusable screws and a safe cardboard saw, you turn a moving box into a car, a rocket or a den. Or get going with wood: building with branches using HABA’s Connectors, a 3D kit from MakeBug or a birdhouse to make yourself.
Already know what your child loves? Below, everything is grouped by type of craft, with the supplies you need to get started straight away.

Making bracelets and necklaces
Boys like making necklaces and bracelets too, as long as the colours are right. With paracord, the strong rope of cool knotted bracelets, and the book Paracord kids you learn the knots. Prefer beads? Choose smileys or katsuki surf beads in cool shades, and put your name or your club on your wrist with letter beads.

Shrink plastic: make your own key rings
Shrink plastic is magic: you draw a design on the plastic, cut it out and in the oven it shrinks into a sturdy little figure. With the pirate set you make a key ring in no time, and glow-in-the-dark plastic lights up in the dark. Punch a hole for the ring before baking and let an adult do the oven work. Ideas on Pinterest.

Tie-dye and fabric paint
With tie-dye, a white T-shirt or a cotton bag becomes their own design: knot, dye, let it soak in and rinse. Prefer drawing? With fabric pens you draw straight onto the fabric; do put a piece of cardboard inside the shirt. ⚠️ Fabric paint and fabric pens won’t come out of your clothes: wear old clothes and cover the table.

Modelling clay and plaster casting
Modelling clay works at any age. Cast a dinosaur in plaster or model one from air-dry clay such as Darwi, and paint it once it’s dry: that’s the cool part. Real modelling clay and salt dough are the most sustainable choice. You make salt dough yourself from 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and about 1 cup of water.

Painting your own mug
A mug you painted yourself is one your child uses every day, or proudly gives away. Take a white porcelain mug and porcelain pens or paint that you bake in the oven, such as the Edding 4200. Only draw on the outside, leave 2 cm below the rim free, and let an adult bake it as the pack says.

Crafting with rubbish: toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and egg boxes
Don’t throw away empty toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and egg boxes: they become a rocket, a crocodile or a castle. Put it together with children’s scissors, glue and coloured card, then give it a makeover with paint, googly eyes and the drawers of the Panduro Craft Box. Loads of ideas on Pinterest.

Sustainable crafting
Sustainable crafting starts with what you already have, as in the blocks about rubbish and nature. If you buy something, choose for example PlayMais (made of maize), Grennn cutters (made of recycled sawdust), felted wool instead of acrylic pompoms, or turn old paper into new paper with Science4you. Pixelhobby and Ministeck
Pixelhobby and Ministeck both work with small pieces on a board, like an old computer game. Pixelhobby has square pixels and medallions for key rings, and Ministeck is the classic mosaic with little stones. Pick a cool theme: vehicles, dinosaurs or space. With Djeco’s mosaic set you decorate three rockets.

More sustainable ironing beads
You place ironing beads on a pegboard and iron them together; an adult does the ironing. Hama Midi Bio and SES’s Green Beedz are largely made from sugarcane and PVC-free, and Hama Midi Bio fits the regular Hama pegboards. Nabbi’s BioBeads (made from grains) are used on their own. If you mix brands, iron a test piece first.

Craft books full of ideas
A craft book gives ideas for years. Het Knalgoede Knutselboek is full of projects with natural and recycled materials, in 51 dingen om te maken met toiletrollen rubbish becomes a car or a robot, and with 333 origami Kids (from age 6) you fold animals and planes. For outdoors there’s the book about crafting with natural materials. (The books are in Dutch, but the pictures show the way.)

Learning to draw
Drawing belongs here too, of course: animals, cars, superheroes or figures in manga style. We have separate blogs for that. The best step-by-step drawing books are in drawing books for kids, and pencils, fineliners and pens in drawing supplies for kids.
How to make crafting fun for boys
- Start with his own interests. Does he love cars, dinosaurs, football or space? Pick a craft kit with that theme and he’ll want to start straight away.
- Make something he can use. A bracelet to wear, a mug to drink from, a shirt to wear to school or a car to play with: then the result isn’t a project that disappears into a drawer.
- Give real tools. A fretsaw, a cardboard saw or modelling tools feel different from plastic. Do choose what suits his age, and join in the first time.
- Choose cool colours. Black, dark blue, green, neon and silver often work better than pastels for beads, clay and pens.
- Make a fixed spot. A craft case or box that holds everything, and an old table or newspaper underneath, so he can start and tidy up by himself.
Frequently asked questions
What can you make with an 8-year-old boy?+
Around eight, crafting becomes more technical: building with cardboard (Makedo) or wood, knotting a paracord bracelet, making figures from modelling clay or salt dough and painting them, or painting a mug with porcelain pens. Pick a theme your child loves, such as vehicles, dinosaurs or football, and it’s interesting straight away.
What is a good craft kit for a boy?+
A kit that makes something cool or useful: a cardboard car or rocket with Makedo, a tie-dye shirt, a Pixelhobby key ring or his own mug. Cool colours (black, blue, green, neon) and themes like vehicles, dinosaurs and space often work better for boys than pink and glitter.
From what age is Makedo suitable?+
The Makedo Discover set and the Safe-Saw are from age 5. That saw is made specially to cut safely through cardboard. With the reusable screws you turn a cardboard box into a car, a rocket or a den, and then take it all apart for the next build.
What’s the difference between Pixelhobby, Ministeck and ironing beads?+
With all three you make a picture from small pieces on a board. Pixelhobby uses square pixels on a plate, also as a medallion for a key ring. Ministeck is the classic mosaic with small stones. Ironing beads (such as Hama) are beads on a pegboard that you fuse together with an iron; an adult does that part.
Which porcelain pens actually work?+
Choose pens made specially for porcelain that you bake in the oven, such as the Edding 4200 or Pébéo’s Porcelaine 150. Ordinary markers and paint pens come off when you wash up. Wash the mug first, wipe it with methylated spirits, let the drawing dry and bake it as the pack says (Edding: 160 °C, 25 minutes; Pébéo: 150 °C, 35 minutes, after 24 hours of drying). After that it can go in the dishwasher up to 40 to 50 °C, but washing by hand keeps it looking good for longer. Only draw on the outside and leave 2 cm free below the rim: none of these pens is meant for surfaces that come into contact with food or drink.
Can you tie-dye with children?+
Yes, with a children’s kit such as the Joyage tie-dye kit (from age 5). Do it outside or on a covered table, with gloves and old clothes, and let the dye soak in for a few hours before rinsing the shirt. Wash it separately the first time.
Do boys like making necklaces and bracelets too?+
Definitely, though often in different colours. Surf beads in dark blue, black or green, letter beads with their name or club, or a tough paracord bracelet. Choose beads and cord in cool colours, and it becomes something they actually wear themselves.
