Craft supplies for girls β creative, colourful and truly home-made
Looking for craft supplies for girls, a craft kit or a creative gift? From bracelets and friendship bracelets to diamond painting, embroidery, slime, painting and giving a jar a makeover: grouped by age and by type of craft.
By Sonja Β·
Girls love crafting something they can wear, show off or give away: a bracelet with their name, a friendship bracelet for their best friend, a sparkly jewellery box or their own painting for their bedroom. With the right supplies it becomes something theyβre really proud of.
In this blog youβll find loads of inspiration: first craft supplies by age, then by type of craft. Bracelets and necklaces, friendship bracelets, diamond painting, embroidery and crochet, making slime, painting on canvas and stones, giving a photo frame, mirror or jar a makeover, modelling clay, crafting with rubbish and with flowers, more sustainable crafting and craft books. Handy as a creative gift for a birthday, Sinterklaas or Christmas too. Looking for craft supplies for boys too? Have a look at our craft supplies for boys, and for the very youngest at crafts for toddlers and preschoolers.
Craft supplies for girls by age
These are minimum ages: whatβs fun from 5 is often still fun at 8. Looking for inspiration for a girl younger than 5? Then have a look at crafts for toddlers and preschoolers. More gift ideas are in our gift ideas for girls aged 5β6, 7β8, 9β10 and 11β12.

Craft supplies for girls from age 5
At five, a girl mostly wants to make something pretty herself. With Djecoβs Nymphea set she makes a tiara and a magic wand, with the Bubbles beads her first necklace, and with SESβs knotting wheel friendship bracelets. A bit older, she decorates five mini boxes with gems. Join in the first time.

Craft supplies for girls from age 8
Around eight, it can get more precise. Braid kumihimo bracelets, emboss lucky charms in metal foil, thread jewellery with Richlyβs luxury beads, or decorate wandering stones with stickers to leave in the park. Crochet, punch needle and small FIMO charms become fun now too.

Making bracelets and necklaces
Making jewellery is the best kind of crafting for many girls. With pastel letter beads you put your name on your wrist, and gold-coloured charms finish it off. Djeco has lovely sets with felt or paper flowers, and for surf bracelets you choose katsuki beads. More examples on Pinterest.

Knotting friendship bracelets
You knot a friendship bracelet from embroidery thread: a few strands in your favourite colours, taped to the table, and then knot away. With the SES knotting wheel itβs even easier. Itβs most fun with a friend, and then you swap them. Examples on Pinterest.

Diamond painting
With diamond painting you use a little pen to stick tiny sparkly stones onto a printed pattern, square by square. Itβs relaxing and the result glitters, like a neon girl or a dog that glows in the dark. Start with something small, like a notebook or a key ring (the SES set is from age 5).

Embroidery, crochet and punch needle
Working with needle and thread is something you can learn young. With the WoodyDoody sewing kit you sew your own woodland animals, and an embroidery kit with a pre-drawn pattern, such as a sloth or a horse, is a nice start. With string art you wind thread around pins into a cheerful figure. Want more? Then crochet and punch needle are the next step.

Making slime
Making your own slime is a bit of crafting and a bit of chemistry: mixing, colouring and kneading until it feels just right. With the strawberry or cloud slime sets and the SES ones (from age 5) you have everything in one box. More sustainable: make slime without borax from cornflour and water, or from psyllium. Your own painting for your bedroom. With Ravensburger paint by numbers you know exactly which colour goes where, and the result is really beautiful. Prefer painting freely? A few canvases and paint are enough. Also fun: decorating stones, with paint or with Janodβs stickers, and leaving them in the park for someone else to find.

Giving a photo frame, mirror or jar a makeover
Giving something you already have your own look: thatβs a makeover. Decorate little mirrors with stickers and mini boxes with gems, or paint a wooden photo frame with pearl paint. Modelling with clay, salt dough and FIMO
From a sustainability point of view, salt dough or air-dry modelling clay is the best choice. For small charms and delicate pieces, FIMO, clay you harden in the oven, actually works best: itβs a plastic and therefore sturdier. An adult does the baking. Did you know you can make salt dough yourself, from 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and about 1 cup of water? Then let it dry and paint it: thatβs how you make your prettiest little works of art!

Crafting with rubbish: flowers, boxes and more
You can make the prettiest things from what youβd otherwise throw away. With Makedo, reusable screws and a safe saw, you build a dollβs house, a little shop or a castle out of a cardboard box. From egg boxes and toilet rolls you cut flowers, butterflies or fairies, and coloured paper, felted wool and glue finish it off. Ideas on Pinterest.

More sustainable crafting
Sustainable crafting starts with what you already have, such as empty jars, egg boxes and flowers from the garden. If you buy something, choose ironing beads made from sugarcane (Hama Midi Bio or SESβs Green Beedz), paper or wooden beads instead of plastic, and FIMO Air, made of kaolin, instead of FIMO. Learning to draw
For many girls drawing is just as much fun as crafting: the cutest kawaii animals, horses that look real or figures in manga style. We have separate blogs for that. The best step-by-step drawing books are in drawing books for kids, and pencils, fineliners and pens in drawing supplies for kids. Does she love horses? Then also have a look at our gifts for horse-loving girls.
How to make crafting fun for girls
- Start with her own interests. Does she love horses, unicorns, kawaii or rather tough things? Pick a craft kit with that theme and sheβll want to start straight away.
- Make something she can wear or use. A bracelet, a hairband, a decorated jar or a painting for her bedroom: then it doesnβt disappear into a drawer.
- Itβs more fun together. Knotting friendship bracelets or threading bracelets with a friend fills a whole afternoon, and then you swap them.
- Give real materials. Loose beads, embroidery thread or FIMO in lovely colours feel different from a ready-made kit. Do choose what suits her age.
- Make a fixed spot. A box with compartments for beads and thread, and an old cloth on the table, so she can start and tidy up by herself.
Frequently asked questions
What can you make with an 8-year-old girl?+
Around eight, a girl can already work very precisely: threading bracelets from katsuki or letter beads, knotting friendship bracelets, doing a diamond painting, crochet or embroidery, or modelling little FIMO charms (from age 8, an adult bakes them). Pick a theme she loves, such as horses, unicorns or kawaii, and sheβll want to start straight away.
What is a good craft kit for a girl?+
A kit that makes something she can wear or show off: a bracelet set, boxes to decorate, a small embroidery kit, a paint-by-numbers picture or a set to make slime. For the youngest girls, kits with everything in them work best; older girls often prefer loose materials to make their own design.
How do you make a friendship bracelet?+
Cut three or more strands of embroidery thread an armβs length long, knot them together at the top and tape the knot to the table. Then plait or knot the strands in turn until the bracelet is long enough, and knot it closed at the bottom. A knotting wheel, such as in the SES BFF set, makes it easier for young children. Pinterest has lots of step-by-step examples.
From what age is diamond painting suitable?+
The SES childrenβs sets are from age 5 according to the pack, with big stones and a small base such as a key ring. The stones are small, so keep them away from younger siblings. Bigger canvases with tiny stones are fun for older children.
Is FIMO clay suitable for children?+
Yes, from about 8: FIMO Kids is from age 8. Your child can knead and shape it, and an adult does the baking in the oven, following the pack. Want something that hardens by itself? Then choose air-dry clay such as Darwi or FIMO Air, or make your own salt dough.
Do girls like building and technical crafts too?+
Of course. Our blog about craft supplies for boys is full of building with cardboard and wood, tie-dye, painting mugs, decorating biscuits and crafting with rubbish and nature: all just as much fun for girls. See what suits your child.
