Gifts for a 4-year-old girl — ideas she’ll love

No time for the whole list? These are our four favourites for a 4-year-old girl: the Elise dressing-up dress from Souza!, a princess dress made of real fabric that lasts for years and still looks lovely after every wash; the Pixie magic wand, a small gift with a big effect; LEGO Mermaid Gabby’s Aquarium Adventure, a 4+ set she builds herself; and the wooden doll’s house from Little Dutch, made of FSC wood, with a family that grows with everything she dreams up. Four gifts you can’t go wrong with.

A small gift for a 4-year-old girl, for the Sinterklaas shoe, for a birthday party or as a reward. Everything below costs less than ten euros.

With up to 25 euros to spend there’s plenty of choice for a 4-year-old girl: a doll, a puzzle, a jewellery set or a first board game. Everything below has been picked for this age.

Plus-Plus is a wonderful building system: one shape, endless possibilities, and the tubes of 100 pieces come in dozens of colours and themes. The BIG version has larger pieces for small hands. A tube makes a lovely small gift; a big box is a present the whole family ends up building with.

Stickers, a colouring book, glitter crafts and chunky colouring pencils that sit well in small hands: at 4, crafts should above all give a pretty result quickly. LazyLama, Pipoos and Invulboekjes.nl have plenty more. Also see our blogs on lovely drawing supplies for children and the best drawing books for children.

A bracelet, a necklace, a headband with a little crown or a set of hair clips: small gifts that feel huge at 4, and easy to combine into a birthday parcel. Wooden beads to thread herself are great practice for little fingers too.

Four is the dressing-up age: princess, fairy, ice queen, or all of them at once. A dress, a cape or a pair of wings made of good fabric gets worn every day for months, so quality pays off twice here. LazyLama has a large range of dressing-up clothes and accessories from Souza! and Great Pretenders: comfortable fabrics, child-safe materials and a finish that lasts for years.

At 4, reading aloud is the best moment of the day. Frog (Kikker), Pluk, Annie M.G. Schmidt and a unicorn who goes her own way: stories with a bit more plot, that you’re still happy to read aloud for the tenth time. Studio Bambacht and LazyLama have a lovely selection of picture books for this age. Most are in Dutch — which, for a child learning the language at school, is exactly the point.

At this age she’d rather be outside all day. A Micro scooter with light-up wheels comes along to school every day — just check the size: the Mini is for ages 2 to 5 (up to 50 kilos, handlebar 49 to 68 cm) and fits a 4-year-old perfectly; the Maxi is for ages 5 to 12 (up to 70 kilos, handlebar up to 91 cm) and still too big for most 4-year-olds, but a good choice if she’s tall or if you want a scooter that lasts through primary school. Also: a beach ball or frisbee, a pop-up tent for shade and a swimming vest for trips to the pool. LazyLama and Little Dutch have the full range.

A 4-year-old can do a puzzle of 24 to 54 pieces on her own, and a floor puzzle is lovely to do together lying on your tummies. Mermaids, fairies and ballerinas always go down well. LazyLama has a large range of puzzles from Djeco and Crocodile Creek, and Lotana a large collection of puzzles for young children.

At 4 a doll really gets looked after: fed, bathed, taken outside in the carrier and put to bed at night. A soft baby doll, a doll’s pram or a wooden doll’s house with furniture and a family give that game a place for years. Little Dutch and LazyLama have the full range.

A game for a 4-year-old needs no reading and lasts fifteen minutes at most. A cooperative HABA game where you win together, a picture card game or a lotto: sitting at the table together, and quite often she wins too. Lotana has the full range of children’s games.

A 4-year-old girl builds her first real LEGO. Sets with 4+ on the box have larger starter pieces, so she can put together a little house, a car or an aquarium without help — and Gabby’s Dollhouse, unicorns and Elsa are the favourites of the moment. Browse the full range in the LEGO Shop.

A fun day out together is a treat in itself: you experience something special and make memories to talk about for ages. A few ideas:

🎪 A children’s show at the theatre

🦒 A day at the zoo or a children’s farm

🛝 A big playground to run wild in

🍦 An ice cream together and feeding the ducks

🍿 A film night with popcorn (and staying up late!)
