Gifts for a 3-year-old boy — ideas he’ll love

No time for the whole list? These are our four favourites for a 3-year-old boy: the Bruder Deutz tractor with front loader, big and sturdy, with a bucket that really lifts; the Little L ball with cars, sturdy and easy to grip, for indoors and outdoors; the picture book Ik heb lekker een hele grote trekker (“I’ve got a great big tractor”), to read aloud together until he knows it by heart; and DUPLO dinosaurs on wheels, three dinosaur vehicles in one box. Four gifts you can’t go wrong with.

A small gift for a 3-year-old boy, for the Sinterklaas shoe, for a birthday party or as a reward. Everything below costs less than ten euros. For more ideas for the shoe, see our small gifts for the Sinterklaas shoe.

With up to 25 euros to spend there’s plenty of choice for a 3-year-old boy: a wooden vehicle, a puzzle, a magnetic book or a first little train. Everything below has been picked for this age.

Many 3-year-old boys discover dinosaurs now, and it often stays that way for years. A first puzzle, a magnetic book or a DUPLO set with dinosaurs: anything with a T. rex on it hits the spot. Choose something he will actually play with, not just something to look at.

At 3 the firefighter is a hero, with the police close behind. A wooden fire engine or police car is sturdy enough to be driven down the stairs, a fire station gets the whole story going, and a magnetic book comes along in the car or to grandma’s. Studio Bambacht has more wooden vehicles from PlanToys and Janod.

Tractors, diggers and tipper trucks: a 3-year-old boy can spend hours with them in the sandpit or on the floor. Choose something that can take a knock and has moving parts, like a bucket that lifts or a grabber that opens and closes. Vehicles like these get played with for years.

A 3-year-old boy wants to run, climb and ride. A balance bike or a scooter with light-up wheels for outdoors, a ball to chase, and for indoors when it rains a balance board or Stapelstein to climb and wobble on. Check the size of a scooter: the Mini fits perfectly now. LazyLama and Little Dutch have the full range of outdoor toys.

At 3, reading aloud is a fixed moment of the day, and a boy this age often wants the same book again and again. A story with a tractor, a farmer or a good helping of silly humour is just right. Studio Bambacht and LazyLama have a lovely selection of picture books for this age. Most are in Dutch — perfect for a child picking up the language at playgroup.

A 3-year-old can do a puzzle of 12 to 24 pieces, and a box of puzzles of increasing difficulty lasts a whole year. A big floor puzzle is one to do together on the floor, and in a magnetic book he slides the figures into the story himself. Vehicles, farm animals and dinosaurs always go down well. Lotana has a large collection of puzzles for toddlers.

Three is the age when dressing up begins: a pirate or a dinosaur, with clothes that are comfortable and can go in the wash. And a play tent as his own little spot to crawl into, read in or turn into a den. LazyLama has a large range of dressing-up clothes.

At 3, crafts are mostly about colouring, scribbling and making something yourself. Chunky pencils and wax crayons sit well in a small hand, and with stencils he draws his own tractor or lorry: quick results and little mess. LazyLama and Pipoos have plenty more.

With DUPLO a 3-year-old builds his first vehicles and houses of his own. The bricks are big enough for small hands and later fit onto ordinary LEGO. Browse the full range in the LEGO Shop.

A wooden train set is a classic that grows with him: start with a small set and add to it every birthday. The tracks usually fit together, even between brands, so an extra train or a bridge makes an easy gift later on. Little Dutch has train sets and separate extensions.

A fun day out together is a treat in itself: you experience something special and make memories to talk about for ages. A few ideas:

🚒 An open day at the fire station

🚜 A children’s farm, or a farm with tractors

🚂 A ride on a steam train

🦕 Naturalis in Leiden or a dinosaur park

🛝 A big playground to run wild in
