School diary 2026-2027 — the best for teens & kids

School diaries 2026-2027 for primary and secondary school: most have sold out, but Amazon still has English-language designs. New diaries in the summer of 2027.

By Sonja ·

The summer holidays aren’t even over yet and the shops are already full of school diaries. 📒 Most children get their first one around groep 7 or 8 (roughly ages 10 to 12) — though some start as early as groep 6 and others only in the brugklas. And especially at secondary school, with all those subjects and tests, a good diary really is indispensable.

New to Dutch schools? Primary school runs from groep 1 to groep 8 (ages 4 to 12), and the brugklas is the first year of secondary school. From the top years of primary school, Dutch children write their homework and tests in their own school diary, the schoolagenda — so choosing a fun one is a small back-to-school ritual.

Whether you’re looking for a diary with Harry Potter or Stitch, a trendy design under €10 or just something affordable: we’ve lined up the school diaries for 2026-2027 (also called school year 26/27), sorted by theme. Further down you can also read how to choose the right size and layout and what’s popular for boys, girls, primary school and secondary school. ✏️

The school year is now well under way and most diaries are no longer available. The most choice is still at Amazon, with the English-language designs you’ll see first below. In the summer of 2027 we’ll update this blog with the new diaries of that moment.

How to choose the right school diary

A good school diary suits your child’s age and the way they work. These points will help you choose:

Size: A5 or A6?

A5 is by far the standard — enough writing space without being too big, good for both primary and secondary school. And for anyone who prefers a compact diary in their bag, A6 is the handy small size.

Bound or ring-bound?

Most school diaries are bound (like a book). A ring-bound diary opens completely flat and is easy to flick through — handy for those who like to keep an overview. Our selection has both.

Layout: day or week?

For primary school a week-to-view layout (the whole week at a glance) is usually enough. At secondary school, with lots of different subjects, homework and tests, a roomy week-to-view across two pages or a day-per-page layout makes it easier to fit everything in.

School-year or calendar-year diary?

Note the difference: a school diary follows the school year (2026-2027), while a year diary follows the calendar year (January to December 2026). For school you almost always choose the school diary. But there are also lovely calendar-year diaries — nice for teenagers who mainly use theirs for free time and plans with friends.

A sturdy cover = a year of enjoyment

A diary spends a whole school year at the bottom of a full bag. A faux-leather or padded cover stays nice for longer than a thin cardboard one.

Let your child help choose

It sounds simple, but it works: a diary with a favourite theme or a nice design actually gets used. Involve your child in the choice, and keeping track of homework stays much more fun.

School diaries for boys, girls, primary or secondary school?

Choose by interest rather than by “boy” or “girl” — but these are the most popular choices per group:

School diaries for boys

Many boys go for a cool or gaming diary, but those have sold out this school year. Films and series such as Harry Potter and Stitch are popular too, as are the English-language designs with SpongeBob or Garfield. And a plain black or kraft diary remains a cool, budget-friendly option to decorate yourself.

School diaries for girls

With girls, trendy designs with flowers or hearts are favourites — you’ll still find those here under €10. And of course many girls also choose a film or series theme or an English-language design; above all, let your child choose by interest.

Primary school (groep 7–8)

The first school diary usually comes in groep 7 or 8 (around 10–12 years old) — the age to learn to plan. Choose a clear A5 with a week-to-view layout; a cheerful theme motivates them to actually keep it up.

Secondary school & brugklas

With lots of subjects, homework and tests, a roomy week or day layout in a sturdy cover is handy. Harry Potter, Stitch and the English-language designs do well here — and those are still available right now.

The best school diaries by theme

Below is our selection for 2026-2027, sorted by theme — from gaming and sports diaries to classics for all ages, trendy designs and affordable basic diaries. Prices and stock can change.

Stylish school diaries (in English)

These English-language school diaries are loved for their coolest designs — and they often come with cheerful stickers so you can make your diary completely your own! 🎨 These are the ones with the most choice right now: while the Dutch themed diaries are as good as sold out, these are still available. The layout differs per diary, so you’ll find those details on the product page. Most run from August to July; a few go from August to June.

Frequently asked questions

From what age or school year do children get a school diary?+

Most children start with a school diary around groep 7 or 8 of primary school (about 10 to 12 years old) — the age to learn to plan. Some children start in groep 6, others only in the brugklas (the first year of secondary school). At secondary school, with many subjects and tests, a diary then becomes indispensable.

When is the best time to buy a 2026-2027 school diary?+

The school diaries for 2026-2027 are in the shops from the summer, and the popular gaming themes (such as Pokémon and Minecraft) are usually sold out around the start of the school year in September. (Dutch schools go back between mid-August and early September, depending on the region.) Left it late? Then look at the English-language diaries and the affordable basic diaries: those are often still available, and are reduced after the start of term too.

Which size school diary is handy: A5 or A6?+

A5 is the standard and the best choice for most children — enough writing space, yet not too big for the bag. A6 is the compact, small size. At secondary school, A5 with a roomy week-to-view layout is usually the most practical.

Which school diary suits the brugklas or secondary school?+

At secondary school you have lots of different subjects and tests. Choose an A5 diary with a roomy week or day layout and a sturdy cover. As for themes, Harry Potter and Stitch do well, as do calm designs without a character.

How much does a school diary for children cost?+

That varies. You’ll find a neat basic school diary at HEMA for a few euros — after the start of the school year they’re often reduced. Diaries with a popular character or theme (Harry Potter, Stitch, Snoopy) usually cost around €15 to €16.

What is a nice school diary for girls or boys?+

Choose by interest rather than by “girls” or “boys”. Popular choices are films and series (Harry Potter, Stitch), English-language designs (Snoopy, Garfield) and trendy designs with flowers or hearts. Above all, let your child choose.
