Football gifts for kids â the best football gift by age
From a small football gift of a few euros to a complete kit â chosen by type and by age.
By Sonja ·
With a football gift you almost canât go wrong with a football fan â boy or girl. And a football gift is much more than a ball: think goalkeeper gloves, training equipment, football books and clever football games. Looking for a small football gift? Thereâs plenty for that too, from about âŹ2. Below is everything by category, with an overview by age and tips for a football birthday party.
Which football gift suits which age?
Every child is different, but this is a handy guide. Always choose by interest too â a gift around a favourite club or player always scores.
New to Dutch schools? Primary school runs from groep 1 to groep 8: children start groep 1 at 4, groep 3 (around age 6) is when they learn to read, and groep 8 (around age 11â12) is the final year.
Toddlers and pre-schoolers (2â5)
Getting to know football through play: Bumba and Bobbi go and play football, a soft or small ball. Above all, enjoy moving and having fun together.
Groep 3â5 (ages 6â8)
Now your child wants to play football for real. Think of a ball (size 3â4), a clever football game for indoors or a football activity book (KNVB or Koen Kampioen, 7+). From age 8, the popular Voetbalhelden fact comics about stars like Ronaldo and Messi are a real winner.
Groep 6â8 & older (ages 9â12)
For the true fan: exciting reading books such as the Snelle Jelle series or the football thrillers by Joep van Deudekom, Koen Kampioen Voetbaldromen (9+), the Wereld Voetbal Recordboek full of facts, the Brainbox football quiz or a match ball (size 5).
For the girls
Football is for everyone! Books like Meidenvoetbal (âGirlsâ footballâ) celebrate womenâs football â a fun and inspiring gift for every football fan.

Footballs
A must-have for every football fanatic: a good ball. Mind the size â size 3 up to about age 8, size 4 up to about 12, then size 5. A lighter ball is nicer for small feet. The mini football (size 1) isnât a toy but a proper training ball: precisely because itâs so small, you have to strike it more accurately. Ideal for training technique and ball control, and it fits in any bag.

Football kit
For a real football fan thereâs little better than the kit of the Dutch national team (the Netherlands play in orange, hence âOranjeâ). An original Oranje shirt with matching shorts turns every kickabout in the garden into an international â and itâs worn with just as much pride to school as to training. The same goes for the Belgian kit, for anyone who lives just over the border or has family there.
Want something cheaper, or not sure which club or country it should be? Then a neutral training shirt with matching shorts is a safe choice â a child can play just as fanatically in that.
With shirts, watch the size: they often come up small, so a size up is usually the safest choice. Looking for socks, boots or goalkeeper gloves? Youâll find them below under accessories.

For the youngest football fan
Are the parents mad about football? Then this is the perfect new-baby gift. An orange babygrow or a complete mini kit always goes down well with a football family â and itâs guaranteed to produce the sweetest photos. Also spot on for a first or second birthday.
Mind the sizes: they go by body length in centimetres (62 to 92 for babies, 104 to 128 for toddlers and young children). Better to go a size up â then it lasts longer.

Accessories
Donât forget the accessories! Goalkeeper gloves are a surprisingly fun gift: for my own son they were the reason he suddenly got extra keen on going in goal. Shin pads are compulsory in matches and tend to go missing, so a new pair is rarely wasted.
Hair bands keep long hair out of the face and make a nice little gift, and for many children a captainâs armband is the best thing there is. Football boots are best bought together â the fit really matters and children have strong opinions about them.

Training equipment
This is where our favourite surprise gifts are. With a set of cones you turn the garden or the local square into a real training pitch in no time: slaloming, dribbling, setting up a course. Children can happily spend a whole afternoon with them, and they last for years.
A ball pump is one of those gifts nobody thinks of but thatâs needed all the time â a flat ball is the biggest spoilsport. A whistle and a stopwatch are gold for the child whoâd rather play referee or coach. And a ball bag is handy for anyone with several balls lying around.

Football books for children
A football book is a gift that lasts: from the very first read-aloud books to exciting stories and books packed with facts. Below are our favourites, handily bundled by series and theme â with an age hint, so you can quickly find something that suits your child. (These are Dutch-language books.)
For the youngest football fans±2â5 years
The very first football books to read together. Bumba (the clown from Belgian childrenâs TV) and Bobbi (a much-loved Dutch toddler character) discover the football pitch, and in the funny picture book Frank and Bert kick a ball about. Lovely to read aloud â and to secretly join in with the ball.

Koen Kampioen7+ and 9+
The classic for young football fans â no fewer than 26 books have appeared in the Koen Kampioen series! Koen is brilliant at football, but can also be wonderfully clumsy. The series has two reading levels: from age 7 (the cheerful football activity book full of games, and the story collection De leukste verhalen van Koen Kampioen) and from age 9 (the exciting Voetbaldromen, âFootball dreamsâ). So you can always find something that matches their reading level.

Football heroes â facts & comics8+
An original comic-style fact book full of funny facts about the very biggest stars. Great for browsing, laughing and learning something along the way â perfect for the fan who wants to know everything about their idol. As well as the titles shown, there are also books about MbappĂ©, Barcelona, Haaland, Salah, Liverpool and Yamal â thereâs an edition for almost every favourite.
The Snelle Jelle series±9â12 years
The lightning-fast football adventures of Snelle Jelle (âSpeedy Jelleâ, by Ad van Gils) have been a hit for years. Short, exciting stories full of matches, goals and club spirit â exactly what a football fan wants to read. A hit? Then youâre set for a while, because the series has no fewer than 20 books.

Football birthday party
A football party might just be the easiest childrenâs party there is: a pitch, a ball and two small goals, and the rest takes care of itself. Allow about two hours for children aged 6 to 10.
- Keepy-uppies â start calmly: everyone tries to beat their own record, not someone elseâs.
- Learn a new trick â a nutmeg, a step-over or the Cruyff turn. Practise for a bit, then show it off.
- Timed slalom â set out cones and time who dribbles through them fastest.
- Mini tournament â teams of two or three, five-minute matches â that way everyone plays often and nobody gets knocked out.
- Penalties against mum or dad â in goal. Guaranteed the loudest moment of the afternoon.
- Medals for everyone â including for the best sliding tackle and the loudest celebration.
- Football cake â or cupcakes with a pitch of green icing.
- Raining? â Children usually donât mind â but do ask everyone to bring dry clothes. Going inside works too: a table football tournament, a football quiz, colouring pages of Ronaldo and Messi for the youngest, or playing matches on the Nintendo Switch or PS5.

Frequently asked questions
What are good small football gifts?+
For a small football gift you donât need to spend ten euros. Giveaway medals cost around two euros, chocolate medals a little more, and football napkins and plates instantly make any treat festive. Something more personal? Think of a captainâs armband, a set of hair bands or football socks â all three under ten euros and all things a child really plays or trains with. Also fun: a size 1 mini football to practise technique with, or a small goal for the garden. Looking for something for a âtraktatieâ (the treat Dutch children hand out at school on their birthday) or a small giveaway? Then the medals are your safest bet.
How do you organise a football birthday party?+
Set out two small goals and make teams of two or three children. Short five-minute matches work best: everyone plays often and nobody gets knocked out. Add timed challenges â slaloming around cones, penalties with the birthday child in goal, and a keepy-uppy contest in which everyone tries to beat their own record. A whistle and a stopwatch instantly make it feel real. Finish with medals for everyone and a football cake; if it rains, the tournament carries on indoors at the table football table. Allow about two hours for children aged 6 to 10.
What do you give a child who loves football?+
A football gift almost always goes down well. Think of a ball in the right size, a clever football game for indoors, an exciting football book or â during the World Cup â cheerful orange party things (orange is the Dutch national colour). Tip: choose something around their favourite club or player, and youâre guaranteed to score.
What is a good football gift for a 10-year-old boy?+
Around age 10, a match ball (size 4â5), a challenging football game like the Brainbox football quiz, an exciting football reading book (such as Voetbaldromen) or a LEGO football set are popular. Also fun: clothing or accessories from their favourite club. And it works just as well as a football gift for a 10-year-old girl.
Which football gift suits which age?+
For toddlers and pre-schoolers, read-aloud books such as Bumba or Bobbi gaat voetballen and a soft ball are ideal. From groep 3 (around age 6) a child wants to play football for real: a ball, a football game or a football activity book. For groep 6â8 (ages 9â12) and older, exciting reading books, a match ball or the Brainbox football quiz are fun.
What is a good football book for a child?+
That mainly depends on the age. For the youngest fans (±2â5), read-aloud books like Bumba and Bobbi gaat voetballen are ideal. From age 7 the Koen Kampioen books are spot on, and from age 8 the popular Voetbalhelden fact comics (about stars like Ronaldo and Messi) are a hit. For confident readers (9â12) the Snelle Jelle series and the football thrillers by Joep van Deudekom are nice and exciting, and those who love facts will devour the Wereld Voetbal Recordboek or Meidenvoetbal. Choose a football book that suits their reading level and their favourite club or player â in our football books section above youâll find a tip for each age. (These are Dutch-language books.)
What size football does a child need?+
A rough guide: size 3 for children up to about 8, size 4 for 8 to 12, and size 5 (the official match ball) from about 12. A lighter or softer ball is nice for the very youngest.
What is a good football gift for a girl?+
Exactly the same as for a boy â football is for everyone! Books like Meidenvoetbal celebrate womenâs football and are extra inspiring. Beyond that, a ball, a football game and the football quiz are just as much fun.
Do you have a football gift under âŹ10?+
Definitely â think of a football book, the Brainbox football quiz, a Loco game or a cheerful ball. Plenty of fun football gifts for a small budget.
Whatâs fun during the World Cup or the Euros?+
During a big tournament you make it extra cosy with orange party things for a match night or a football party. A lovely moment to enjoy football together.
